Educators will gather this May to tackle climate change and find ways to integrate environmental education in the curriculum for the coming school year.
The 15th IBON Partnership in Education for Development (IPED) Annual Educators' Conference will discuss the concept of environmental justice and its relevance to development efforts in the Philippines.The conference, to be held in Puerto Princesa in Palawan and themed "The Filipino Educator's Role in Promoting Environmental Justice, Peace and Development" will be gathering teachers, school administrators and other members of the academe.
According to IPED, the theme is relevant especially amid the growing number of climate-related disasters and the resurgence in mining in the country.
IPED noted that many environmental advocates have been bringing environmental issues into the public debate to prompt government into action, and schools should also be involved in addressing the challenge. It is thus important to ensure that environmental education is integrated in the basic education curriculum.
The conference aims to contribute to building awareness and capacity among educators in teaching environmental issues. IPED hopes that in raising awareness among educators, the activity will benefit students in elementary and high school "who are the future generation."
Speakers of the conference will include Climate Change Commission Undersecretary Naderev M. Saño and Mika Ortega, daughter of slain journalist and anti-mining advocate Gerry Ortega. Saño will speak on government's response to climate change while Ortega on the challenges to educators in promoting environmental justice, peace and development.
IPED is a program of IBON Foundation promoting transformative education through textbooks, supplementary educational materials, teacher training and conferences to grade schools, high schools and universities nationwide. The IPED Conference will be held on May 1-4 at the Circon Businessman Inn, Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

Mga edukador, magpupulong sa Palawan tungkol sa edukasyon para sa kalikasan
Magtitipon ang mga edukador ngayong Mayo upang pag-usapan ang climate change at maghanap ng paraan upang mailakip ang edukasyon para sa kalikasan sa kurikulum para sa susunod na taong pampaaralan.
Tatalakayin sa 15th IBON Partnership in Education for Development (IPED) Annual Educators' Conference ang konsepto ng environmental justice at ang kinalaman nito sa mga pagsisikap para sa kaunlaran sa Pilipinas. Isasagawa ang kumperensya sa Puerto Princesa sa Palawan na may temang "The Filipino Educator's Role in Promoting Environmental Justice, Peace and Development". Titipunin rito ang mga titser, administrador ng mga eskwelahan at iba pang myembro ng academe.
Ayon sa IPED, ang tema ay naapanahon laluna sa gitna ng papalaking bilang ng mga sakunang may kinalaman sa klima at ang panunumbalik ng pagmimina sa bansa. Kinilala ng IPED na maraming tagapagtaguyod ng kalikasan ang naghahapag ng mga isyung
pangkalikasan sa pampublikong debate upang hamunin ang gubyerno na kumilos, at ang mga eskwelahan ay dapat na maging bahagi sa pagharap sa hamon na ito. Kayat mahalaga para sa IPED na ang edukasyong pangkalikasan ay maipaloob sa batayang kurikulum pang-edukasyon.
Nilalayon ng kumperensya na makapag-ambag sa pagpanday ng kamulatan at kakayahan ng mga edukador sa pagtuturo ng mga isyung pangkalikasan. Inaasahan ng IPED na sa pag-angat ng kamulatan ng mga edukador, makikinabang ang mga estudyante sa elementarya at highschool na siyang "susunod na henerasyon".
Ang mga tagapagsalita ng kumperensya ay kabibilangan nina Climate Change Commission Undersecretary Naderev M. Saño at Mika Ortega, anak ng pinaslang na journalist at anti-mining advocate na si Gerry Ortega. Tatalakayin ni Saño ang tugon ng gubyerno sa climate change habang si Ortega ay kaugnay ng mga hamon sa mga edukador sa pagpalaganap ng environmental justice, kapayapaan at pag-unlad.
Ang IPED ay programa ng IBON Foundation sa pagpalaganap ng ”transformative education” sa pamamagitan ng textbooks, suplementaryong gamit pang-edukasyon, pagsasanay ng mga titser at mga kumperensya sa mga gradeschool, highschool at mga unibersidad sa buong bansa. Ang Kumperensya ay isasagawa sa May 1-4 sa Circon Businessman Inn, Puerto Princesa, Palawan.
