The Balikatan military exercises with the United States (US) under the Marcos Jr administration are the biggest ever with the number of US troops growing from a few hundred in the 1990s to as much as 12,000 last year. The growing show of US military force is the US signalling its readiness to go to war in the region to protect its interests, with the smaller and weaker Philippine armed forces as its junior partner.
